Introduction:

As remote work and virtual meetings have become the norm, technology continues to evolve to deliver a more personalized and immersive meeting experience. One such innovative development is the introduction of people recognition in Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows. This feature, enabled through face enrollment on the desktop client, is set to revolutionize how we conduct and participate in virtual meetings.

The Technology Behind People Recognition:

Microsoft's IntelliFrame technology is at the core of this development. Applied in Microsoft Teams Rooms and certified Teams cameras, IntelliFrame uses artificial intelligence to ensure the active speaker is correctly identified, providing an inclusive meeting experience for both remote and in-room participants.

The recognition feature, an essential component of IntelliFrame, uses Microsoft's proprietary technology to identify individuals present in a Teams meeting room. Once a participant enrolls their face using the Microsoft Teams desktop client, the system can identify them and display their name on their videos as well as in the meeting roster. Those who do not enroll will be identified as "Guests." This technology not only enhances the personalization of virtual meetings but also improves the clarity of communication among participants.

Getting Started: User and Admin Actions

To take advantage of the IntelliFrame people recognition feature, users need to enroll their face using the settings on their device. Additionally, the meeting rooms must be equipped with cameras that support IntelliFrame. Currently, the Yealink SmartVision 60 and Jabra PanaCast 50 are among the certified cameras that support this feature, with other models expected to be available soon.

Users can enable Face Recognition by navigating to Settings > Recognition on their personal device. Here, they will find instructions to complete both voice and face recognition. It's important to note that face enrollment can only be initiated after completing voice enrollment.

The Admin's Role

Admins play a vital role in enabling this feature. To start with, they need to set the Teams policies to enable people recognition. Also, for IntelliFrame, they need to install a Microsoft Intelligent camera in their conference room connected to Teams Rooms. The feature is available with a Teams Rooms Pro license, which admins must ensure they possess, as a basic license only provides the Active Speaker view, not IntelliFrame or Recognition.

Furthermore, to enable face enrollment, admins need the CsTeamsMeetingPolicy enrollUserOverride tenant policy set to "Enabled." Once this policy is active, the face enrollment option will become available under the Recognition tab, along with voice enrollment.

Conclusion:

The people recognition feature in Microsoft Teams Rooms is a game-changing development set to redefine virtual meetings. With its rollout scheduled to begin in August, the feature is primed to make online meetings more engaging and interactive, thus improving productivity and collaboration. It is a testament to Microsoft's commitment to leveraging AI to enhance user experience and workplace efficiency.

Remember to keep an eye out for the new release and ensure your Teams Rooms are equipped to harness the full potential of this innovative feature.
