Adapting to Change: Retiring Wiki in Teams and Alterations in Normalization

As we continuously strive to improve the user experience, Microsoft is making important updates to Teams' features. Two key changes are the retirement of the Wiki feature and changes to normalization protocols.

Revamping Note Taking: Transitioning from Wiki to OneNote in Teams

Microsoft has announced that the Wiki feature will be phased out from Teams, with OneNote taking its place as the new collaborative tool for note-taking in Teams Channels. Our users' evolving needs inspired this shift, recognizing that OneNote provides enhanced capabilities and user experience.

This GIF depicts the process of exporting content from a Wiki to OneNote in Microsoft Teams. It starts with the user selecting the specific Wiki within a Teams Channel. The user then clicks on the '...' (more options) button at the top-right corner of the Wiki page and chooses the 'Export to OneNote' option from the dropdown menu. A progress bar appears, indicating that the Wiki content is being exported to a OneNote notebook. Upon completion, a notification pops up, confirming the successful transfer of the Wiki content to OneNote. The GIF ends with the user navigating to the 'Notes' tab in Teams, where the newly exported content from the Wiki is now accessible within a OneNote notebook.

Timeline of the Wiki Phaseout

The Wiki retirement process will be divided into three stages:

  1. Stage 1 (Early March 2023): Users won't be able to create new wikis but can continue to access and edit existing ones. The option to export wiki content to OneNote will also be available.

  2. Stage 2 (Mid CY23): The Wiki tab in channels will no longer be supported, although users can still access their content through the Wiki app.

  3. Stage 3 (January 2024): The Wiki tab and app will be inaccessible in Teams, and users won't be able to export content. However, wiki files can still be downloaded from SharePoint.

The new OneNote feature in Teams Channels presents an enriched note-taking experience with capabilities for easy collaboration, viewability of all channel notes within a single notebook, rich editing options, and enhanced searchability within the OneNote app on any platform.

In due course, a OneNote tab will be added by default when users create new channels. Until then, users can manually create OneNote tabs via the add tab option. To prepare for these changes, users are urged to export their channel wikis to OneNote once it is available.

Normalization Updates: Ending Normalization on Numbers Starting with Plus Sign (+)

Normalization in Microsoft Teams is being updated. Previously, the Teams desktop or Web client didn't enforce the rule against normalization when the phone number started with a plus sign (+), but future updates will enforce this.

The change will align Teams with our Calling Service, other Teams services, Azure Communication Services SDKs, and other Microsoft services. Numbers starting with a plus sign (+) will not pass through any normalization rules. However, translated numbers not starting with a plus sign (+) will pass through normalization rules more than once.

This change will start rolling out mid-July and is expected to be completed by late August. To prepare for this transition, users should either dial the correct E.164 number starting with a + or dial numbers without a + to match dial plan policies.

These changes aim to enhance the efficiency and user experience within Teams, encouraging collaboration and seamless communication. Microsoft remains committed to supporting users throughout these transitions, ensuring our software continues to meet your evolving needs.
