Important Updates: The Retirement of PDF Tools App and Introduction of Group Chat Copy Links

In the ever-evolving landscape of software applications, updates, and changes are a part of the process. This blog post serves to notify you of upcoming modifications to certain Microsoft applications you may be using.

The Retirement of PDF Tools App

One of the major updates involves the PDF Tools app. Microsoft has announced that they will be retiring the PDF Tools app from Teams, Office, and Outlook store by mid-July 2023. This means users and administrators will no longer be able to use this app once the change takes effect.

However, Microsoft has recommended several alternatives to help with your PDF-related needs:

  1. Web or Desktop Endpoint: If you're using a web or desktop endpoint, you can convert Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files to PDF by opening the file in its respective app, clicking on File -> Print, and selecting "Microsoft Print to PDF" under Printer.

  2. Adobe License: For Adobe license holders, you can save your file as a PDF directly by clicking on File -> Save as Adobe PDF.

  3. Office.com Access: If you have access to Office.com, simply right-click on any file without opening it and select "Convert to PDF" to convert the file to PDF directly.

  4. Microsoft 365 Mobile App: For mobile users, the Microsoft 365 mobile app on Android or iOS offers several PDF-related features. On Android, you can go to the "Apps" tab, select "PDF Tools", then "Document to PDF". The app also has other PDF-related features like Scan to PDF, Pictures to PDF, PDF to Word, etc., all available for free use.

In light of this change, you might need to update your training and documentation accordingly.

Introduction of Group Chat Copy Links

In other news, Microsoft is rolling out a feature that will allow group chat members to create and share links to specific messages within the chat. The purpose of this feature is to improve communication and organization of information in group chats.

This feature will start rolling out in early June and is expected to complete by early July for Targeted Release, and from early July to the end of August for Standard Release. This change will only affect members already in the chat. No action is needed to prepare for this change, but you may want to notify your users about it and update any relevant documentation.

These updates show Microsoft's commitment to continually refining and improving its suite of tools. While the retirement of the PDF Tools app may require some adjustments, the recommended alternatives and the introduction of the group chat copy links feature signify a step towards a more streamlined and efficient user experience.
