Microsoft Teams: Enhancing Meeting Accessibility and Security

Microsoft Teams is set to roll out two significant updates aimed at enhancing the accessibility and security of Teams meetings. These updates are designed to provide more flexibility for users joining meetings and to bolster the security of chat access during meetings.

Join Teams Meetings from Non-Teams Devices

Microsoft Teams is introducing a feature that will allow meeting participants to join from non-Teams applications or devices. This feature is dependent on your guest join settings when you send a Microsoft Teams meeting invite. Participants joining through this method will be classified as guests, and all guest settings applied by your organization will apply to these participants.

This feature offers the benefit of allowing users, associates, and customers to join Teams meetings from non-Teams devices through certified Cloud Video Interop (CVI) providers. If your settings allow guests to join your Teams meetings through a browser, your guests will also be able to join through supporting CVI providers.

The rollout of this feature began in May and is expected to be completed by late June. There are no increased risks associated with this feature. The meeting invite will, as always, come from you, and these guests will only be able to join through a certified CVI provider that has enabled them to join Teams meetings.

If you prefer not to have guest participants join through certified CVI providers, you can block guests from joining your Teams meetings, which will also prevent all guests from joining from a browser.

Blocking Meeting Chat Access in External, Non-Trusted Meeting Joins

Microsoft Teams is also set to release a new meeting chat setting that will allow IT Admins to block internal users from accessing chats when these users join meetings organized on external non-trusted tenants, including cross-cloud join. This feature will be rolling out across MS Teams Desktop, Mobile, and Web.

The rollout for this feature is scheduled to begin in early July and is expected to be completed by late July. IT Admins can modify this setting for internal users from the Teams Admin Center under External Meeting Chat or from PowerShell under AllowExternalNonTrustedMeetingChat. Internal users who have External Meeting Chat as OFF from the Admin Center or AllowExternalNonTrustedMeetingChat as False from the PowerShell will not have read or write chat access in meetings hosted on external non-trusted tenants on any Teams platforms.

You may want to notify your users about this new setting and the potential effect on their chat access when joining external meetings.

These updates are part of Microsoft Teams' ongoing commitment to providing a secure and accessible platform for effective collaboration and communication. Stay tuned for more updates and enhancements in the future.
