Upgrading 3PIP Phones to Microsoft Teams with SIP Gateway

With the retirement of Skype for Business Online (SfBO) in July 2021, organizations need to find a solution for their 3PIP phones. Microsoft now offers a solution through SIP Gateway, which enables these devices to securely connect and function as Microsoft Teams endpoints. In this article, we will guide you through the process of upgrading your 3PIP devices to connect to Teams through SIP Gateway.

When to Start?

We highly recommend starting the upgrade process as soon as possible, as Skype for Business Online will be permanently turned off on July 31, 2023. SIP Gateway is the recommended approach for customers to continue using 3PIP phones with Teams.

What is SIP Gateway?

SIP Gateway enables customers to use compatible third-party devices with Teams, providing core Teams calling features such as incoming and outgoing calls, call forwarding, dial-in and dial-out from meetings, and more. SIP Gateway is available with your Teams Phone Standard license with PSTN enabled.

Benefits of Upgrading to SIP Gateway

Upgrading to SIP Gateway offers the following benefits:

  • Added security for your phone devices with Teams
  • A future-ready core telephony platform
  • The ability to join Teams meetings on SIP devices
  • Managing multiple concurrent calls

How to Upgrade Devices to SIP Gateway?

Your administrator needs to follow these steps:

  1. Provision your devices with SIP Gateway: This process varies depending on the device manufacturer, such as AudioCodes, Poly, or Yealink. Ensure that your devices are onboarded to their respective device management platforms, firmware versions are upgraded, and SIP Gateway provisioning URLs are configured.

  2. Configure SIP Gateway for your organization: Follow the guidelines provided by Microsoft to set up SIP Gateway for your organization.

  3. Activate your devices to use SIP Gateway: Sign in to the device locally or enroll the device for remote sign-in from the Teams admin center.

For detailed instructions on provisioning and activating devices, refer to the manufacturer's documentation.
