Microsoft Teams Public Preview Update: Forced Policy Enables Admins to Bypass User Opt-In
Microsoft Teams has announced an important update to its Public Preview, which offers early access to pre-release features for product quality, internal planning, adoption, and training readiness. The update allows IT administrators to move users to Public Preview without requiring them to opt-in manually via the Teams app.
The Public Preview policy can be enabled on a per-user basis, and the option to turn on Public Preview is controlled via Teams admin policy. Previously, when admins enabled this policy for an end-user, the user needed to opt-in via the Teams app to join Public Preview. With the introduction of the new "Forced" value for this policy, IT admins can now move users directly to Public Preview without the need for user opt-in.
Microsoft Teams will begin rolling out this update in early March, with the rollout expected to be completed by late March. This policy change will streamline the process for organizations, removing the need for users to take an extra step to opt-in to Public Preview via the Teams app.
To manage this policy, IT administrators can access the Teams Admin Center and navigate to Teams > Teams Update Policies.
Additionally, PowerShell can be used to update this setting (CsTeamsUpdateManagementPolicy). An example cmdlet to set the Teams global policy to follow the Office preview via PowerShell is as follows:
Set-CsTeamsUpdateManagementPolicy -Identity Global -AllowPublicPreview "Forced"
Microsoft Teams also welcomes feedback on any feature in Public Preview. Encourage your users to send feedback about Teams features through Help > Give feedback and following the prompts. Their input will help shape the Microsoft Teams experience for the rest of your organization.
